Abbeville County School District News

May

Long Cane Primary kindergarten students and teachers completed a service learning project by collecting and sending boxes of food, toiletries, games, etc. to soldiers now serving in Afghanistan. They were able to send 6 large boxes to Aaron Aldridge and his platoon and to our former guidance counselor's two sons, both serving in Afghanistan.

LCP Students of the Month for April 2012
We are so proud to announce our LCP Students of the Month for April 2012. The character trait for the month is HONESTY. Way to go LCP students!!!

Class Culture Projects at JCCE
Students in Fran Brown's and Stephanie Boyd's first grade classes at John C. Calhoun Elementary School produced projects for a unit on foreign cultures.

Westwood Students Learning to Play Musical Instruments
5th grade students in Allison Beaty's music class at Westwood Elementary were able to play various musical instruments when a representative from Draisen Edwards Music Center in Anderson was invited to come. Each student was able to try an instrument of his or her choice.

Gearing Up for the Science Fair at JCCE
Students in Adrienne Wells' 5-year-old kindergarten class at John C. Calhoun Elementary School record scientific observations of bean plants as they prepare for the upcoming science fair. The fair will be held on May 24th and students in grades K-5 will participate with class and self-made projects for the competition

Pixy Stix inventor talks to Abbeville High students
Pixy Stix inventor Glen Davidson talks about business, chemistry and life with Abbeville High School Students Friday, April 27 in the AHS auditorium. Davidson was invited to the school by chemistry teacher Martha Kinsler.

Gardening at Cherokee Trail
Mrs. Lynn Patterson's First Grade class at Cherokee Trail Elementary School planted a garden and had great success.  They planted and have begun to harvest strawberries, lettuce, radishes, and will soon harvest carrots and cucumbers!

Mrs. Waters' First Grade at Diamond Hill Elementary
The students were making cool designs using pattern blocks during math class.

Cherokee Trail has Winning Ecybermission Teams
Cherokee Trail teams won First and Second-Place in the state of South Carolina in the 2012 Ecybermission online math and science competition sponsored by the US Army for the second consecutive year. The First Place Team was “The Geek Squad” with team members: Taylor Scott, Whitney Poore, Kate Walker, and Conor Smith. This team was also one of four southeastern regional finalists. The Second Place Team was ‘The greenhornets” with team members: Tyler Lusk, Grant Alexander, and Michael Krajci. The Geek Squad did an experiment on methods for middle school students to reduce paper waste on a daily basis. They each won a $1000 savings bond. The greenhornets' project dealt with ways to prevent wildfires from spreading from their containment area. They each won a $500 savings bond. Science and Math teachers, Margaret Farner and Jenny Seawright were team advisors for these teams as well as the other six teams that entered the competition from Cherokee Trail.

Cherokee Trail Students Participate in Science Labs
Third grade students at Cherokee Trail were able to participate in various science labs from the Physics students and their professor, Rich Schelp, from Erskine.  They watched how the pitch changes using instruments made from PVC pipe, made their own instruments from straws that were cut into different lengths, learned about frequency, and sound waves.  To finish the afternoon off, students learned how fast sound travels by listening to Rich Schelp steadily beat a drum as they moved farther and farther away.

The Three Little Pigs Blame It On The Wolf, 4 th Grade Play at WWES
The students in Anna Williams' fourth grade class at Westwood Elementary recently performed a play from their Reading book, “Blame It On The Wolf”. Students were encouraged to decorate masks and create simple costumes that helped them assume the roles they would have in the play. The performance was conducted for the principal and other teachers.

Westwood Students Hit A Home Run in Multiplication
Eleven students in David Whitmire's Third Grade class at Westwood Elementary School in Abbeville have mastered the basic multiplication facts 0 -12. The students were challenged to hit a home run in multiplication by getting all the facts in 5 minutes and as a reward they received a baseball signed by the Abbeville High School varsity baseball team. Westwood Students of the Month - Hope
Hope is believing that something good can come out of something bad. The students at Cherokee Trail Elementary School raised over $1400 for the American Heart Association by participating in the Dodge Ball tournament to Dodge Heart Disease. Group winners were: 6th and 7th grades: Laython McClean, Owen Taylor, Tyler Lusk, Shakura Tanner, Branson McClain, Katie Turner 4th and 5th grades: Bradley Nickles, Yarik Stalin, Nolan Prince, JD Carter, Savannah Patrick, Kaleb Gambrell 2nd and 3rd grades: Blaine Throckmorton, Cody Quarles, Zack Pressley, Ashley Dent, Amya Nance, Joshua Dorsey, Dusty Hester

Abbeville County Career Center welcomed non-traditional students for a tour in early April.

Abbeville Career Center holds Honor Society Induction
The Abbeville County Career Center inducted twenty-five students into the National Technical Honor Society on Friday, March 23. The induction included a candle lighting ceremony, the reciting of the Honor Society's pledge, and the individual presentation of honor stoles.

Evening Prom Held at JCCE
Fifth grade students at John C. Calhoun Elementary School celebrated with an evening prom held at the school on Friday night, April 6th. Music and refreshments along with festive decorations created a special night for the students.

Westwood Students of the Month – Conviction
The Character word for the month of March was “Conviction”. Conviction means standing for what is right even if others don't. Zoo Trip 4K and 5K JCCE Students
Varonica Crawford's, Adrienne Wells' and Debbie Johnson's classes from John C. Calhoun Elementary School visited the Greenville Zoo for a “live” lesson on zoo animals.

Underage Drinking Survey - Cornerstone Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and the Abbeville County Coalition for a Healthy Community have received a grant to implement underage drinking prevention activities in Abbeville County.  The first step in this process is to gain information about the prevalence of the problem and to assess the needs of the County.  As a result, Cornerstone and the Abbeville County Coalition are asking that you complete an anonymous survey to generate information from the community about the problem.
